Former Ghana U-20 and Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu has tipped Asante Kotoko to overcome Nigerian side Kwara United in the preliminary round of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
The Porcupine Warriors will host the first leg in Kumasi between September 19–21 before traveling to Ilorin for the return fixture scheduled for September 26–28. Both sides secured qualification for the competition after winning their respective domestic FA Cups last season.
Mutawakilu, who enjoyed a long career in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with Rangers International, Rivers United, and Akwa United, believes his former club, Kotoko hold the upper hand. Having previously featured for Kotoko at the youth level and Hearts of Oak at the senior level, the experienced shot-stopper shared his thoughts with Radio Gold.
“Continental football is different—it’s not like a normal league game. It’s a game of the mind, and Kwara United have made a lot of signings,” Mutawakilu said.
“But comparing what I saw in the league, they can’t stand Kotoko. I watched Kotoko against Kaizer Chiefs, and with the talent they have, I believe they will be too strong for Kwara. Ghana versus Nigeria games are always tough because of the culture and bragging rights, but I will still tip Kotoko ahead.”
The winner of the Kotoko–Kwara United clash will face Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club in the second preliminary round.
