Carlos Queiroz is set to return as manager of the Egyptian men's national team, renowned journalist Ahmed Shobier has hinted.

Current coach of the Pharaohs Rui Vitória is under intense pressure to lose his job following Egypt’s abysmal AFCON campaign, which saw them exit the competition in the round of 16.

Egypt didn’t win a single game in Ivory Coast, drawing all three group games, before losing to DR Congo on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

However, rife reports in the North African country indicates that the Minister of Youth and Sports of Egypt Ashraf Sobhy is aiming to go on the negotiation table with the experienced Portuguese trainer, who led Egypt to the 2021 AFCON final and the World Cup playoffs before losing both on penalties to Senegal.

“Carlos Queiroz is one of the prominent candidates to take over the Egyptian national team, and the Ministry of Sports is inclined towards his return,” Ahmed Shobier said.

“If Queiroz returns, he will not deal with this football association. Vitoria desires to continue leading the Pharaohs, and his contract is valid with a release clause. He will not waive any part of his contract and wants to complete it.

“Vitoria wants to fulfill his mission and acknowledges that he made mistakes. He learned from them and aims to rectify them in the upcoming period.

“After returning from the Ivory Coast, EFA president Gamal Allam suggested making changes to Vitoria’s coaching staff. He wants Ayman Abdel-Aziz and Mohamed Ghoraba to leave the staff.

“After sensing public anger in Egypt following the exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, he began considering Vitoria’s dismissal, but they are studying the situation of the release clause.

“The return of Carlos Queiroz is very possible, and this is the desire of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. It is also possible that Vitoria continues," he concluded.
