Chelsea FC are reportedly interested in signing Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba at the end of the season as new manager Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen the club’s defence ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
According to reports, Alonso is keen on reuniting with the Burkina Faso international after working closely with him during his successful spell at Leverkusen.
The Spaniard is expected to play a major role in Chelsea’s transfer decisions following his appointment at Stamford Bridge, with improving the defensive unit believed to be one of his top priorities.
Tapsoba has emerged as a key target, with Alonso reportedly viewing the 27-year-old centre-back as an ideal fit for his tactical system and long-term plans at the club.
However, Chelsea are expected to face a difficult challenge in negotiations as Leverkusen are reluctant to lose one of their most important defenders.
The German side are likely to demand a substantial transfer fee for the highly-rated centre-back, who has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent defenders in recent seasons.
A move to the Premier League could nevertheless appeal to Tapsoba as he seeks the next major step in his career.
Standing at 6ft 4in, the powerful defender is known for his composure on the ball, aerial dominance, and ability to play in a high defensive line — qualities that could suit Alonso’s preferred style at Chelsea.
The familiarity between player and coach is also seen as a major advantage, with Tapsoba already understanding Alonso’s tactical demands and approach to building from the back.
Chelsea’s defensive struggles this season have highlighted the need for reinforcement at the back.
The Blues have conceded 50 goals in 37 Premier League matches and currently sit eighth in the table, far below expectations for a club aiming to compete for UEFA Champions League qualification and major trophies.
