Ghanaian legend, Asamoah Gyan, has endorsed Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as a prime contender for the 2023 African Player of the Year accolade.
Osimhen enjoyed a highly successful club season, steering Napoli to their first Serie A championship in 33 years. Additionally, the Super Eagles sensation clinched the Golden Boot Award in Italy by netting an impressive 26 goals in the preceding season.
In an interview with Nigeria's Brilla FM, Gyan emphasized that Osimhen's remarkable performance cannot go unnoticed, affirming his belief that Osimhen rightfully merits the 2023 African Player of the Year award.
Gyan stated, "For me, he deserves it. As a striker and seeing what he is doing, for the first time in over 30 years, winning the league with Napoli. He deserves it," in his conversation with Brilla FM.
The Confederation of African Football will unveil the new recipient of the award later in the year, following Sadio Mane's capture of the 2022 African Player of the Year title. Mane, a former Liverpool player, had led Senegal to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations and secured domestic trophies in England.
