South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed his ambition to secure a place for the team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana will be away to Nigeria in Uyo on Friday, before hosting Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein next Tuesday for their fourth Group C game.
South African fans are hoping the experienced tactician can help Bafana advance to the third round and, ultimately, book a ticket to North America for what would be a 'plan well executed' World Cup qualification.
“You know, I said it already before, they qualified for big tournaments like AFCON and the World Cup is very important for the country. You see what happened after we played in the AFCON, suddenly everyone said ‘Wow, South Africa’,” said Broos.
“It’s important for South African football but it’s also important for South African players, suddenly there is interest. So, it’s very important again how after a good performance in the AFCON that we qualify also for the World Cup because if we don’t then they put you back again to where we started, six, seven months ago.”
He added: “Qualifiers for the World Cup, everybody knows that every one of us wants to go and wants to qualify for the World Cup in 2026 but we are in front of two very tough games. First of all, Nigeria, a finalist in the AFCON, players who are playing in the best competitions in Europe.”
