South Africa defender Grant Kekana has responded to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Julius Malema following their AFCON semifinal match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Although Bafana lost their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match to Nigeria on Wednesday, the EFF leader is proud of the lads – especially the Mamelodi Sundowns defender.

“Well done my boy. A soldier must die with his boots on,” the EFF president shared a picture of Kekana praising him for his heroics on X,

Responding to the maverick politician, Kekana wrote: ”My president,” adding a red heart emoji and a folded hands emoji.

Bafana lost the match 4-2 on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw at the Stade la Paix de Bouake in Ivory Coast against Nigeria.

Kekana “took one for the team” during the match when he denied Super Eagles Terrem Moffi a goal scoring opportunity when he fouled the striker just outside the box.

The 31-year-old defender received a red card for his tackle on the Super Eagles attacker, subsequently causing a free-kick which was saved by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Many, including Malema – praised Kekana for his decision, as Super Eagles would have likely scored had he not fouled Moffi.
