Joseph Paintsil has earned high praise from Greg Vanney, with the LA Galaxy head coach describing the Ghana international’s versatility and explosive pace as a major tactical advantage for the MLS side.

Since joining LA Galaxy in 2024, Paintsil has become a key figure in Vanney’s squad, playing a decisive role in their championship-winning campaign in his debut season. Despite a brief spell on the sidelines due to injury this season, the 28-year-old has returned strongly, scoring twice in his last three MLS appearances.

His latest influence came last Saturday against Vancouver, where his late contribution secured a valuable point for the former MLS champions and further underlined his importance to the team’s attacking setup.

Speaking after the match, Vanney was full of admiration for the Ghanaian forward’s unique attributes.

“What he gives us is he's fast as hell, and he can run behind anybody from anywhere at any moment. It gives you something that the opposition really has to respect. It gives you something that the opposition is fearing at all times,” Vanney said.

He added that Paintsil’s movement and unpredictability consistently trouble defenders, especially in transition situations.

“That can help everybody a little bit. With his pace and direct running, he’s going to get chances that nobody else can get. When he plays centrally, he’s more involved in the game than when he’s on the wing,” Vanney explained.

The Galaxy coach further noted that Paintsil’s shift into a central role has increased his overall influence on matches, making him more involved in attacking phases.

“When he’s in the middle the last few games, I feel he’s really involved in more actions. For centre-backs, a small, quick, shifty player like him is a nightmare,” he added.

Vanney concluded by stressing Paintsil’s importance to the team’s attacking identity, particularly in breaking defensive lines.

“Everybody needs someone who can go behind, and Joe is our No. 1 guy in being able to do that for sure.”
