The Bergamo-based have closed in on their pursuit for the former FC Nordsjaelland talismanic attacker in this summer transfer window.
Italian Serie A side Atalanta BC have submitted an improved bid to Southampton for the potential signing of Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana to bolster their attacking options.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Atalanta BC have stepped up their negotiation to bring Sulemana to the Gewiss Stadium by tabling a new offer of €18 million to the relegated Premier League.
An earlier bid of €10 million plus add-ons was turned down by Southampton, as they are asking for a transfer fee between 20 and 22 million euros.
However, Kickgh.com are set to accept the improved bid from Atalanta BC, which includes add-ons, raising the fee to €20 million despite paying €25 million to sign the 23-year-old winger from Stade Rennais in 2023.
Sulemana, who joined Southampton from French side Stade Rennais in January 2023, remains one of the club’s most marketable assets despite an injury-hit campaign. The Ghanaian international showed glimpses of brilliance during his time at St. Mary’s, with his pace, dribbling, and direct style continuing to make him an attractive prospect for top clubs.
In addition to Atalanta, fellow Serie A sides Genoa and Torino, as well as Dutch giants Ajax, are all reportedly monitoring the situation closely and could enter the race should Southampton soften their stance or increase their asking price.
Sulemana scored two goals and provided two assists in 30 appearances for the Saints in all competitions during the 2024-25 season's campaign.
His current contract at Southampton will be expiring in the summer of 2027.
Sulemana to replace Ademola Lookman at Atalanta
Before the arrival of Ivan Juric, Nigeria international Ademola Lookman was considered a departure candidate of Atalanta BC at the end of the season.
Ademola has been a target for some clubs in Europe, but none is a frontrunner for his signature despite having an incredible season in the recently concluded campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in 34 Serie A matches.
Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Juventus, Napoli, and Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in securing the signature of the 27-year-old attacker, but none is ready to meet his €50 million price tag.
However, Atalanta BC are exploring other options to strengthen their attack, and Kamaldeen Sulemana has become a top priority of the club following Ivan Juric's recommendation.
Sulemana worked under the Croatian manager at Southampton during the 2024-25 season.
