The on-loan RC Lens midfielder is set to return to France during the January transfer window.
English Championship side Sunderland FC are considering terminating the loan contract of Ghana international Salis Abdul Samed following his injury situation.
The 24-year-old arrived at the Stadium of Light outfit on a season-long loan deal from French Ligue 1 side RC Lens on the transfer deadline day after being declared as surplus to requirements by manager Will Still.
He was later demoted to the RC Lens reserve side as the club was looking for possible suitors to acquire the signature of the Ghanaian on a permanent deal, but only Sunderland approached for a season-long loan deal on the last day of the summer transfer window.
However, Abdul Samed is yet to make his debut for the Black Cats due to a muscle injury, and his date of return from the treatment room keeps getting pushed back.
Two months ago, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said in an interview that Samed Salis has been involved in the first-team training and would be available for selection in eight or ten days. But now it’s looking more like the midfielder is not returning to action anytime soon.
We will decide on Salis Abdul Samed and others in January, says Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris
Speaking to The Northern Echo, Regis Le Bris said he is hoping for the possible return of Salis Abdul Samed, Ahmed Abdullahi, and Ian Poveda, who are responding to treatments on respective injuries.
“We should have two or three players that haven’t played so far available by January,” said Le Bris.
“I would like to have Ahmed, Salis, and Ian in the team because, so far, we haven’t really been able to see what they can do.
“If these three players are available, then the team should be even stronger. They are players with three different profiles to what we currently have.”
Le Bris then gave an indication towards potential player departures at the Stadium of Light in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Frenchman said: “Then, we will also have to see whether or not we lose other players before January. Hopefully, that will not happen, but we will have to see.”
Salis Abdul Samed's current deal with RC Lens will expire in June 2028.
