Roberto Di Matteo needs to strengthen his Aston Villa squad even further if they are to challenge for promotion back to the Premier League.

With Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye all but set to join Everton, according to Sky Sports, manager Roberto Di Matteo must ensure he moves swiftly in the transfer market to replace what he will lose with the Senegal international's departure.

A wonderful option for the Villans is former AC Milan, Inter Milan and Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari .

The 31-year-old Ghanaian is currently available on a free transfer following his release from Saudi Arabian side Ittihad.

He would be the ideal acquisition for Villa, with his superb range of passing and tenacious nature being exactly what the Midlands club is short of in the middle of the pitch.

Muntari is experienced within the English game, having a spent a season with Portsmouth, and has all the attributes necessary to make a big difference in Villa's hopes of achieving promotion.

Roberto Di Matteo's men not only lack a combative element in their midfield, but they are also woefully short of experienced heads, and the signing of Muntari would solve those two issues in one fell swoop.

Another feather to Muntari's bow is his powerful left foot, which he uses to great effect to shoot from distance.

Villa's goalscoring record in the Premier League last term was embarrassing to say the least, as they managed just 27 goals in 38 outings - a major contributing factor to their relegation.

The Ghanaian would certainly help out in this department, and if a move came to fruition for Muntari his ability is such that Villa fans would quickly forget about Gueye.

One factor that could prevent a move is Muntari's likely high wage demands, but with no transfer fee to pay out it would be a signing that Villa are entirely capable of making.
