Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah made his debut for Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Jose Earthquake in their 2-1 loss to Atlanta United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.
The gutsy centre-back joined the Quakes at the start of the 2022/23 season from Columbus Crew.
Mensah was handed a starting berth by coach Luchi Gonzales and went ahead to play a full 90 minutes.
San Jose opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Cameroonian and Malagasy descent Jeremy Ebobisse.
Atlanta United were awarded a penalty in the 39th minute but failed to score from the spot-kick.
Midfielder Thiago Almada scored twice to snatch all the three points for the Five Stripes in the season opener.
