Black Stars defender Mohammed Salisu will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury, Black Stars team doctor Dr Prince Pambo has confirmed.

The 26-year-old AS Monaco centre-back sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a league match against Olympique Lyonnais in January. Salisu has undergone successful surgery and started gym-based rehabilitation, but a medical assessment in France revealed he will need at least nine months to fully recover, ruling him out of the continental showpiece.

“Mohammed Salisu will miss the World Cup; his knee injury requires nine months to recover,” Dr Pambo told Asempa FM.

Dr Pambo also gave an update on midfielder Francis Abu, who suffered a serious ankle injury during Ghana’s Kirin Cup clash against Japan in November.

“Francis Abu was expected to recover five to six months after surgery, but he is responding well to treatment,” he said.

Ghana will open their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L campaign against Panama, before facing England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will regroup in March for friendlies against Austria and Germany as part of their World Cup preparations. Head coach Otto Addo is set to announce the final squad on June 1.
