German-born Ghanaian striker Ilyas Ansah scored twice on his Bundesliga debut to power FC Union Berlin to an important home win against VfB Stuttgart in the 2025–26 season's opening game.

Ansah, who arrived at the Berlin-based outfit this summer from SC Paderborn, made an instant impact in Union Berlin's colours by scoring a brace in a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon.

The 20-year-old announced his presence by putting smiles on the faces of the Union Berlin fans at Alte Foersterei Stadium with his strike in the 18th minute of the game.

He doubled the advantage on the stroke of halftime with a beautiful volley when he pounced on a pass from Andrej Ilic, which saw the home side leading 2-0 for the break.

In the second half, VfB Stuttgart took over possession to dominate the remaining minutes, and they were inspired byscoring two late goals, but only Tiago Tomas' strike in the 86th minute was recorded.

Bayern Munich target Nick Woltemade thought he had snatched a late point for Stuttgart with his goal in the 90+7 minute, but it was ruled out after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

Union Berlin held on to inflict a defeat on the visitors to secure the three maximum points at home.

Ilyas Ansah joined Union Berlin on a long-term contract for a transfer fee of €4 million from SC Paderborn this summer.

Despite playing for the Germany U20 team, he remains eligible to represent Ghana at the international stage due to his Ghanaian heritage from his parents, who are natives of the West African nation.
