Stade Rennais coach, Bruno Genesio has disclosed that Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana was bent on joining Southampton, as he insists that it wasn't worth keeping a player who doesn't wants to play for the club.
The 20-year-old swapped the Roazhon Park for the St. Mary's stadium in a £22.5 million deal on the deadline day of the just ended January transfer window.
Sulemana scored six goals for Rennes since joining from FC Nordsjaelland in the summer of 2021.
Bruno Genesio says Kamaldeen Sulemana started well at Rennes before he had a difficult run, but insisted that he wasn't ready to keep him because he didn't want to play for the club.
"It's not that it never took off. There were good beginnings, then periods of injury and poor form. A team that started to turn, to churn victories and it was more difficult for him.
"There was also impatience because he's still very young player. He still needs to be trained.
"He wanted to leave, it wasn't our case. He wanted it so badly that at some point, it's not worth keeping a player who doesn't want to play for a club.
"I prefer to get a player who wants to come, who's motivated to play for his club," he added.
