Head coach of Gor Mahia, Charles Kwablan Akonnor has called for calm and focus from his players as the Kenyan Premier League title race becomes increasingly tense, reiterating that the six-point lead at the top is not enough to relax.

Gor Mahia return to action next weekend as they prepare for another crucial fixture in their quest to defend the league title, knowing every game from here on carries added pressure.

Their momentum was boosted by Saturday’s 2-1 win over Mathare United at the Nyayo Stadium, thanks to Enock Morisson’s late penalty.

The Green-Whites after the narrow win extended their points to 49 but direct competitors AFC Leopards, however, kept the pressure alive with a resounding 5-1 victory over Shabana FC, closing the gap to six points and injecting fresh life into their own title ambitions.

Speaking after the game, the ex- Black Stars gaffer says they are currently on top and will have to do away with complacency and stay very focused until they secure the title.

“Six points gap is good, but it is not over. We still have to keep going,” Akonnor told Flashscore.

“We still have to believe in ourselves… we have to continue to work, continue to believe in ourselves and see what happens at the end of the season.”

CK Akonnor and his men will now shift their attention to their next fixture away at Posta Rangers on this Thursday, March 5.
