Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey says the next Black Stars coach must understand the problems facing Ghana football.

Ghana are in the hunt for a new coach after Carlos Queiroz left the job following a shambolic start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have set up a five-member committee to find suitable candidates for the job. The committee is expected to submit its report on Friday, 9 October.

Lamptey believes the next coach must understand Ghana’s football system and the problems affecting the game at all levels.

“We have to make sure that the next person we appoint will know our situation,” Lamptey told 3Sports.

“It is not about the Black Stars; our football has gone down.”

Ghana started their Group C campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia in Accra.

The Black Stars led 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium but failed to hold on to their advantage as The Gambia scored four times to complete a comeback victory.

The two defeats have left Ghana without a point from their opening two matches and increased pressure on the GFA.

The results have increased concerns about Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON after the Black Stars missed the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

Ghana will look to get their campaign back on track when they face Somalia twice in November, with both games set to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Incessant reports indicates that the search committee could appoint an interim coach for those matches before naming a permanent coach.
