Former Ghana Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his popularity for political gain during the 2024 General Elections.

In an Instagram Live session, Gyan, one of the country's most iconic footballers, expressed his disappointment over his involvement in the ruling party's campaign efforts.

The 39-year-old initially joined Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s sports manifesto team in February 2024, ahead of the elections. His association with the NPP raised eyebrows, as many fans were surprised by his apparent support for the party.

However, Gyan distanced himself from the NPP just weeks later after a viral video surfaced showing an altercation between him and an NPP official. He announced that he was stepping down from the party to focus on his humanitarian work.

“They (NPP) used my popularity to get votes from the people,” Gyan stated, expressing his frustration over being used in the political campaign.

The NPP, despite their efforts, suffered a crushing defeat in the presidential election in December 2024, losing to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a significant margin.
