Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan, renowned for his illustrious career with the Black Stars, recently unveiled his selection for the best Ghanaian national team lineup of all time.
Having retired from professional football in 2023 after a remarkable 19-year stint with the Black Stars, Gyan reflected on his time playing alongside iconic figures such as Michael Essien and the legendary Samuel Osei Kuffuor from Bayern Munich.
In his distinguished career, Gyan also shared the pitch with modern talents including Daniel Amartey, Mubarak Wakaso, and the Ayew brothers, all of whom left indelible marks on Ghanaian football.
Gyan, who served as the Black Stars' captain from 2012 to 2019, unveiled his dream team lineup, which notably included players he didn't have the opportunity to play with. His selection omitted some revered figures like Laryea Kingston and Anthony Yeboah.
His all-time eleven comprises Richard Kingston in goal, flanked by defenders John Paintsil, Hans Adu Sarpei, John Mensah, and the legendary Sammy Kuffour. In midfield, Gyan opted for the formidable duo of Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah. On the flanks, he chose Sulley Muntari on the left and Yaw Preko on the right, while the attacking force was led by the iconic 'Maestro' Abedi Pele alongside Gyan himself.
"Richard Kingston, John Paintsil, Hans Adu Sarpei, John Mensah, and Sammy Kuffour. In the middle, Michael Essien, and Stephen Appiah. I will play Sulley Muntari on the left and on the right, I will take Yaw Preko and upfront it will be 'Maestro' Abedi Pele and myself," he told Angel TV.
Gyan emphasized that the selection represents his personal choice for the ultimate Black Stars lineup, emphasizing that it's his definitive all-time eleven.
"Let it be clear this is my eleven. My all-time eleven," he added.
Furthermore, Gyan revealed his favorite teammate during his tenure with the Black Stars, naming Kwadwo Asamoah as his top pick. He praised Asamoah's humor and camaraderie, highlighting their close bond on and off the field.
"There were a lot of players I played with, but Kwadwo Asamoah was my favourite teammate. He became my roommate. He is shy but he is very humourous. He cracks jokes a lot," he added.
