Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston says competition level and regular playing time will be key factors in his selection of players for the Black Stars if he gets the opportunity to coach the national team.
Kingston, who has expressed interest in taking charge of Ghana’s senior national team, explained that players must prove themselves in competitive leagues and earn their places through consistent performances.
Speaking to 3 Sports, the former midfielder said playing at a high level would be an important requirement for national team selection.
“First of all, which level are you playing in? Your team and the level of league that you are playing, the competition that you are playing in,” Kingston said.
He added that players outside the world’s top leagues would need to demonstrate exceptional ability to merit a call-up.
“A senior national team player should be playing, at least our target should be like top 10 football countries, top 10 leagues. Unless if you are outside top 10 leagues, you must be extraordinary.”
Kingston also stressed that being part of a club squad should not automatically guarantee selection, insisting that players must be getting regular minutes.
“Are the players regular, playing actively, not making the squad, but getting minutes? Starting, getting minutes, then we can look at the form of the players.”
The former Black Stars midfielder has continued building his coaching career after retirement and remains one of the names linked with the vacant Ghana coaching position
