The Ghana government has confirmed its financial support for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season as part of efforts to strengthen domestic football.

Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Iddie Adams revealed that the government is backing the competition with the aim of helping clubs become financially stable and eventually operate without heavy reliance on state funding.

Speaking to Max TV, Adams explained that the intervention is designed as a temporary measure to support clubs while they build stronger financial structures.

“Government is sponsoring it (GPL) and intends to continue to sponsor up to a point that the clubs can be on their feet,” Adams said.

The Sports Minister added that the government’s broader objective is to develop domestic clubs and improve the overall football ecosystem in Ghana.

Ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, all 18 Ghana Premier League clubs received GH¢1 million in financial support to assist with operational expenses and preparations for the season.

The government’s involvement comes at a time when the league has struggled to secure a major commercial title sponsor, leaving clubs facing financial challenges.

Adams stressed that the long-term goal is to create a stronger and more sustainable domestic league where clubs can generate enough revenue to operate independently.

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season features 18 clubs competing for the title and continental qualification spots.
