Asante Kotoko winger Joseph Amoako has reportedly been handed a two-year jail term in Sweden for raping a 16-year-old girl.
Amoako, who was transferred to relegated Swedish Allsvenskan club Helsingborgs IF on a season-long loan deal from Kotoko, has been found guilty of the statutory rape of a minor in Sweden and sentenced to two years in jail.
The 20-year-old was detained in Swedish Police custody in November 2022 for court trial after being charged of engaging in sexual affairs with a minor.
Helsingborgs IF cancelled his loan de due to the rape allegations before the contract expired in January per the agreement with his parent club, Asante Kotoko.
The Helsingborgs District Court found the budding talented winger guilty on two counts and handed him a 24-month jail term.
Once Amoako has completed his prison term he will deported from Sweden he has also been ordered to pay damages to the teenager.
He becomes the third Ghanaian footballer to be jailed in Sweden over rape allegations after Kingsley Sarfo and Kwame Bonsu
Amoako struggled for playing time at Helsingborgs IF where he made only ten (10) game outings — 295 minutes — for the club in all competitions.
He joined Asante Kotoko on a three-year deal from lower-tier side Red Bull Football Club in October, 2021.
Amoako, who is under a three-year contract with the Porcupine Warriors recorded four assists before getting sidelined through an injury last season.
