A Ghanaian supporter has been arrested by Ivorian Police for assaulting Black Stars coach Chris Hughton after the team's 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the opening games of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars suffered a shocking defeat to Cape Verde in their Group B opener at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium on Sunday evening.

Jamiro Monteiro opened the scoring in the 16th minute for the Blue Sharks before Djiku levelled after the break but a goal from Garry Rodriguez in the dying embers of the fixture aided Cape Verde to secure all the three maximum points.

Following the defeat, an unidentified Ghanaian supporter in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire vented his anger to attack the 65-year-old tactician at the team's hotel.

It took a timely intervention of the Ghana Football Association, Ministry of Youth and Sports and some Ghanaian diplomats to rescue the former Brighton and Hove Albion manager.

The supporter was handed over to the Ivorian Police in Abidjan.

Ghana will continue their group B campaign against Egypt, who shared spoils with Mozambique in their first game, on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium before they take on Mozambique in the final group game.
