In a post-match conference, Chris Hughton, the recently appointed coach of the Black Stars, addressed his decision to keep captain Andre Ayew on the bench during their game against Angola, which they won 1-0 with a goal from substitute Antoine Semenyo.

Hughton explained that it was a challenging decision to make, as he had to balance Ayew's quality with the overall strength of the team.

Despite the confusion it caused among fans, Hughton emphasized that it was simply his choice as a head coach.

"This is the choice you have as a head coach," Hughton said during a post-match conference.

"You know the quality that Andre has, you also know the quality that I like to think the squad have...so these are very difficult decisions for me; certainly nothing to read into that. He is, has been and is still a very good player it was just my choice."

Even without Ayew, Ghana's victory places them at the top of Group E in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with 7 points.

They will play Angola again on Monday, hoping to maintain their lead in the group.
