A delegation led by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, Mark Addo joined the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace for the celebration of Akwasidae in Kumasi earlier Sunday, March 19.

Newly-appointed Ghana coach Chris Hughton and his assistant George Boateng were present at the festival to pay homage to the king of the Ashanti Kingdom.

The Akwasidae Festival is celebrated by the Ashantes once every six weeks on a Sunday. The celebration is focused on remembering and acknowledging past kings and offering ancestral reverence.

Both Hughton and Boateng are currently in the city of Kumasi ahead of their official unveiling as coaches of the senior national team of Ghana on Monday, March 20 at the SG Mall.

Hughton, who formerly handled Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United in the English Premier League, was named as replacement for Otto Addo who left his role as Ghana coach after the Black Stars' group stage exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Ghana Football Association has already announced that details of his contract and other technical team members will be revealed at the official unveiling ceremony slated for Monday, March 20 at the SG Mall in Kumasi.

The first assignment of the Irish-born Ghanaian tactician in the dug-out of the West African nation will be next week against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana will host the Palancras Negras of Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, March 23 before travelling to Luanda on March 27 for the second leg tie.
