Former Black Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak team manager Sylvester Nii Sabahn Quaye will be buried on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at the Rev. Thomas Clegg Methodist Church in Kaneshie, Accra.
Nii Sabahn Quaye, popularly known as Champion TM, died on 28 June 2026, aged 77, after a period of illness.
He served Hearts of Oak for many years, playing an important role during some of the club’s most successful periods. He earned respect in Ghanaian football for his professionalism, discipline and commitment to the game.
His experience later earned him an appointment as team manager of the Black Stars, where he was known for his football knowledge and fatherly support for players.
After his time with Hearts of Oak and the national team, he continued his career as a team manager and administrator at Legon Cities FC before illness forced him to step away.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that members of the football community will attend his funeral to honour his contribution to the game.
At the family's final funeral planning meeting on Saturday, 3 October, GFA Foundation director Malcolm Frazier Appeadu was present to familiarise himself with the arrangements.
He also conveyed the GFA President's condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of the football community's support during the funeral. The family expressed its gratitude to the Association for its assistance with the preparations.
In April 2023, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku led a delegation of football administrators and former Black Stars players to visit Nii Sabahn Quaye after he had fallen ill. During the visit, the GFA Foundation made a financial donation to support his recovery.
The GFA has since joined the wider football community in paying tribute to his dedication, enthusiasm and lasting contribution to Ghanaian football.
The Association has extended its condolences to his widow, children and the entire family, while encouraging members of the football community to support them in giving him a befitting farewell.
Those present at the funeral planning meeting included family head and brother of the deceased Robert Quaye, E. J. Larbie, Nat Quaye, Rev. Canon Prof. John J. M. Martey and the widow, Mrs Deborah Quaye.
