Ghana’s 2–0 defeat to Japan in Friday’s friendly was overshadowed by a serious injury to midfielder Francis Abu, who suffered a broken leg in the second half after an awkward collision.

The Toulouse midfielder went down immediately following a challenge, his leg twisting beneath him before he slumped to the turf in clear distress.

Medical staff rushed on and, after several minutes of treatment, Abu was stretchered off, unable to bear weight on the injured leg.

However, Alidu Seidu was introduced in his place, though the mood among the Black Stars remained subdued for the remainder of the match.

Japan eventually added a second goal to secure victory, capping a chastening evening for Otto Addo’s side.

Early assessments confirmed that Abu has sustained a broken leg, meaning he now faces a lengthy absence from the pitch. Further medical examinations will soon provide a clearer picture of the damage and how long his rehabilitation will take.
