Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie says improving Ghana football is more important to him than becoming president of the association.

Afriyie, who lost to Kurt Okraku in the 2019 GFA presidential election, has been linked with a possible return to the race for the top job.

However, he says he is not focused on becoming GFA president.

“I’m not desperate to become Ghana Football Association president. I’m desperate to get the best for Ghana football,” he told Sporty FM.

His remarks come as pressure increases on GFA president Kurt Okraku after Ghana’s lackadaisical start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

The Black Stars have lost their opening two Group C matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia and are yet to earn a point.

Afriyie has also raised concerns about some promises made under Okraku’s administration, particularly plans to improve facilities for Colts football and create partnerships between Ghana Premier League clubs and grassroots teams.

He believes Ghana football needs wider changes to improve its administration and support the development of the game at all levels.

Afriyie made the exposition as the next GFA presidential election approaches in October 2027.
