The pots for the 2023 U-23 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco have been confirmed, with Ghana and host nation Morocco among the eight participating countries.
The tournament, which is exclusively for players under the age of 23, will take place from Saturday, June 24 to Saturday, July 8, 2023.
Ghana, making their second appearance at the event, have been confirmed in Pot 1 for the group stage draw, along with West African neighbors Mali. Hosts Morocco and holders Egypt are seeded in Pot 1, while Gabon and debutants Congo, Guinea, and Niger are in Pot 2.
As a result, Ghana will be placed in the same group as either Morocco or Egypt and then two of Gabon, Congo, Guinea, and Niger.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to announce the date for the draw. The U-23 AFCON will also serve as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, with the top three teams qualifying for the Olympics, and the fourth-placed team playing against an Asian team to determine the final Olympic slot.
Ghana is aiming to qualify for the Olympics for the first time since 2004 in Greece, having missed out on the previous edition in Japan after finishing fourth at the U-23 AFCON in Egypt.
