Former Ghana striker Samuel Opoku Nti has stated that he's not satisfied the Black Stars can be built around local based players.

The ex-Asante Kotoko player's comments comes after flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama insisted he will team-up with the Ghana Football Association to build the Black Stars around homegrown players.

However, Opoku Nti in an interview with Kessben FM has poured cold water on that assertion.

“It is not possible to build the national team around local players. Until the economy changes to be buoyant and companies sponsoring the Ghana Premier League, it will be very difficult to get the core Black Stars team from the local scene”

“During our playing days, Kotoko were able to produce 12 players, with eight starters for the national team. It has happened before but we should ask ourselves why players stayed in the local scene at the time. It was because the economy was good, where supporters had enough funds to even gift players”

“The factors are enormous but we have to lay a certain foundation first and the foundation is how we can make the economy better," he concluded.
