Following Ghana's disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, Alhassan Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, expressed skepticism about investing further in the Black Stars.

The Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, revealed to Parliament that the ministry had initially budgeted over $8.5 million for the tournament but ended up spending just over $3 million for the team's participation in three matches.

In response to the expenditure, Suhuyini questioned the justification for spending such a substantial amount, stating, "Did we really need to spend over US$3 million for networking purposes? Is this expenditure truly justifiable?"

He criticized the significant investments made in the Black Stars, arguing that they were misallocated and ineffective.

Ghana's disappointing campaign saw them fail to advance to the Round of 16 after finishing third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, followed by consecutive 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, sealing their elimination from the tournament.

This marked the second consecutive AFCON tournament in which Ghana exited at the group stage without securing a victory, further extending the nation's drought for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.
