Ghana’s Sports and Recreation minister, Hon. Kofi Adams, has surprised fans and players alike by awarding Asante Kotoko GH¢10,000 following their thrilling comeback win over Accra Hearts of Oak in the 2025 President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, July 6.

The fiercely awaited clash lived up to expectations, with Hearts of Oak taking an early lead in the 27th minute thanks to Hamza Issah’s finish, capitalising on a defensive slip by Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara.

However, the tide turned decisively in the second half, as defender Konadu Yiadom’s own goal brought Kotoko level, before Kwame Opoku fired them into the lead and kept the pressure on Hearts.

After the final whistle, Adams honoured the team with a surprise visit to their hotel, handing over the GH¢10,000 reward. “I have also given you, for your drive back, GH¢10,000. When you get there you can buy some water,” he said.

“Congratulations, our target is the continental level – we will be there to support. We will mobilise, personally and at national level, to do whatever it takes so that you can win.”

Kotoko’s victory not only secured bragging rights and an unbeaten run but also boosted morale ahead of next season and their trip to South Africa for the Toyota Cup against Kaizer Chiefs.

The minister’s gesture has been widely praised, seen as a morale booster ahead of more ambitious continental campaigns.
