Former Ghana winger Laryea Kingston has rated Michael Essien above Thomas Partey as the best midfielder, following months of debate between the two.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Kingston acknowledged Partey's impressive talent but emphasized Essien’s remarkable achievements, particularly during his time at Chelsea.
Kingston highlighted Essien's ability to break into and become a key player in a highly competitive Chelsea squad, which he believes makes him the superior midfielder.
"They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but for me, I think I was really, really privileged to play alongside Michael Essien," Kingston said. "We all know what he did at Chelsea when they had a fantastic, very strong team. He was a regular in the team, playing week in and week out."
While Kingston praised Partey for his strengths, he stressed that Essien's impact at Chelsea set him apart. "Partey has his strengths and has done very well, but for me, Michael Essien was something else," he added.
Essien, who retired in 2020, had an illustrious career, winning the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, multiple FA Cups, and League Cups. He played for top clubs such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.
Thomas Partey, meanwhile, is widely regarded as one of Arsenal's top defensive midfielders. His achievements include winning the UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Europa League, and a La Liga title.
