Former Ghana international Mohammed Polo has raised concerns about the preparedness of domestic players for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, asserting that only Benjamin Asare merits a spot in the Black Stars squad.

Polo, a one-time African Cup of Nations winner, criticized the declining standard of the Ghana Premier League.

“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” he told Connect FM. Reflecting on recent domestic matches, he added, “Despite Hearts of Oak receiving a red card, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant… it all comes down to quality.”

Ghana, preparing for their fifth World Cup, have been drawn in Group L with Panama, England, and Croatia.

They will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and Croatia on June 27, with pre-tournament friendlies against Austria, Germany, and Mexico. The squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States during the tournament.
