Chairman of the National Sports Authority Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has rallied behind André Ayew, insisting he deserves a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The debate over Ayew’s potential return to the Black Stars has divided opinion among fans, with some backing his inclusion due to his experience, while others believe it is time to give opportunities to younger players.

The 36-year-old has been absent from the national team for over a year and recently returned to competitive action after a six-month spell out, joining Dutch side NAC Breda earlier this year and is already off to an impressive start in the Eredivisie.

Despite his time away, Ankrah believes the former captain’s experience could be vital for Ghana on the biggest stage.

“If Andre Dede Ayew is fit, he should be included in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup because he is Ghana’s most experienced player,” he said.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, and will open their campaign on June 17 in Toronto, with the final 26-man squad expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
