Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe believes the Black Stars’ current crisis is the result of a long-term decline and did not begin with their recent defeat to The Gambia.

Ghana suffered a painful 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium after surrendering a two-goal lead, extending their poor run in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The defeat followed a 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké, leaving the Black Stars without a point from their opening two Group C matches and extending their winless AFCON qualifying streak to eight games.

However, Tamakloe insists the focus should not only be on the latest results but on deeper issues affecting Ghana football over several years.

Speaking about Ghana’s prolonged AFCON drought, the former GFA boss said the country must address the factors behind its inability to win the continental title for more than four decades.

“I think first and foremost, we have to look at our failure for the past 40 years plus. We’ve not been able to bring the cup to our shores here, and we have to find our home.”

Tamakloe noted that Ghana previously had strong football structures that contributed to success and believes those foundations must be revisited.

“We were picking this cup consistently for some time, and factors put in place at that time were factors that were really helping football.”

The comments come amid growing criticism of the direction of Ghana football, with calls increasing for major reforms following the Black Stars’ disappointing performances in recent competitions.
