Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has raised concerns over the influence of personal interests in the selection of players for the Black Stars.
His comments come after Ghana’s disappointing 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars appeared on course for victory after taking a 2-0 lead through Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan, but The Gambia staged a remarkable comeback to score four goals and secure all three points.
The result leaves Ghana without a point from their opening two AFCON qualifying matches and extends their winless run in the qualifiers to eight games.
Speaking on Joy FM, Nyaho-Tamakloe suggested that some players are selected based on connections within football administration rather than purely on performance.
“Why don’t they stop it? They have interest in some of these boys, and that is where the problem is coming from.”
“Many of these players get to be called just because of the association with big people in the FA setup.”
The former GFA boss believes such practices can affect the competitiveness of the national team and make it difficult to build a strong squad based on merit.
His comments add to growing criticism surrounding Ghana football following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and their continued struggles in the 2027 qualifiers.
Ghana will look to revive their campaign when they face Somalia in November.
