The dynamic duo from Medeama, Jonathan Sowah and Abdul Fatawu Hamidu together with Asante Kotoko’s Richmond Lamptey have clinched spots in Ghana's final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

Highlighted for their stellar performances in the Ghana Premier League, Lamptey, Sowah and Hamidu have earned coveted positions in the 27-man squad, a decision revealed by Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton on Monday morning.

Previously part of the 55-man preliminary squad, the Medeama pair's impressive showings in the Ghana Premier League paved the way for their inclusion. With consistent contributions to the local scene and Africa campaign, Sowah and Hamidu have become fixtures in the Black Stars lineup.

As Ghana gears up for the AFCON tournament, the team will undergo preparations in Kumasi. Drawn in Group B, the West African powerhouse is set to face Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde in the group phase.

Ghana boasts a rich AFCON history, clinching the title four times, with the most recent victory in 1982. However, the team has faced heartbreak in three subsequent finals, succumbing to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties, Egypt in 2010, and a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.

The AFCON 2023 tournament is slated to commence on Saturday, January 13, running through to February 11, 2024.
