The Ghana Football Association has begun the process of appointing a new Black Stars coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo, with several options under consideration ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana were first dismantled 5-1 by the Austria national football team in Vienna, a performance that exposed weaknesses across all departments. Hopes of a response were dashed days later when the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Germany national football team in Stuttgart, further deepening concerns over the team’s readiness for elite competition.
With performances falling short and expectations rising, the GFA on Monday night parted ways with Addo Nonetheless, discussions around possible replacements are gaining momentum.
5. Winfried Schäfer – Experience and Stability
The veteran German tactician offers a steady and experienced hand. With deep knowledge of African football and already part of Ghana’s technical setup, Schäfer could provide continuity and short-term stability if required.
4. Kwesi Appiah – The Familiar Route
A return for Appiah would represent a “Sankofa” approach. Having previously led Ghana, he understands the pressures and expectations. However, his current role with the Sudan national football team could complicate any potential move.
3. Tom Saintfiet – The African Specialist
Saintfiet’s extensive experience across African football makes him a strong contender. Known for his disciplined and structured style, he could bring the organisation Ghana appeared to lack in both friendly defeats.
2. Kim Lars Björkgren – The Modern Option
The Swedish coach has impressed with the Ghana women's national football team, guiding them to a third-place finish at WAFCON. His progressive ideas and tactical flexibility could signal a bold new direction.
1. Hervé Renard – The Dream Appointment
Renard remains the standout candidate. With a proven track record in African football and success on the global stage, he would represent a high-profile appointment. However, his current role with the Saudi Arabia national football team and contractual situation could make a deal difficult.
