Arsenal legend Ian Wright has applauded Tariq Lamptey for his bold decision to represent Ghana's senior national team at a young age.

Despite being born in England to Ghanaian parents and featuring for England's youth teams, Lamptey made the significant choice to commit to the Black Stars in September 2022.

This decision comes amidst growing concerns voiced by former African football stars about players born abroad who consider their ancestral countries only as fallback options when opportunities with their adopted nations diminish. Lamptey, however, defies this trend by choosing Ghana at just 22 years old.

"You look at Tariq Lamptey, and he's a fantastic player, a fantastic right-back. Maybe he's seeing his path to England is blocked," Wright said during an appearance on PL Stories. "When you consider the player who kept him out of Chelsea, Reece James, and how good he is, it's understandable why Lamptey might seek opportunities elsewhere.

"For me, what Tariq has done is commendable. He is someone who deserves to be on that stage. If he can achieve that with Ghana, then he should fully embrace it. I believe we’re going to see more of this trend, as players like Tariq recognize their potential and seek to fulfill it without waiting in the wings," Wright added.

Lamptey's decision highlights a growing trend of young, talented players choosing to represent their countries of origin, and Wright's praise underscores the importance of making such decisions with confidence and pride.
