Ghana boss Otto Addo has backed Antoine Semenyo after the striker came under fire for his subdued display in the Black Stars’ 1-0 win over Mali in World Cup qualifying.

The Bournemouth forward worked tirelessly but failed to make a major impact in Accra, his only real chance a tame effort before half-time.

Despite his lack of attacking threat, Addo was full of praise.

“It’s difficult to compare games from the Premier League with games in Africa and in Ghana,” Addo said. “Surely, you can say that he stands out more in the Premier League, but for me today he was excellent. He fought until he couldn’t run anymore. I was very satisfied with his performance.”

Semenyo, who has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month in August, has been in top form for Bournemouth but has struggled to replicate that at international level.

Addo, however, insists the 24-year-old remains a key part of his plans as Ghana edge closer to a place at the 2026 World Cup.
