Christian Agyenim Boateng scored as Heart of Lions inch closer to the Premier League top spot, six points from reaching the summit with victory over beleaguered Legon Cities at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Seeking only their eighth top-flight win of the season, the home side started on the front foot but fell behind after Lions' superb attempt in the 40th minute.
A certain former attacker of Kasoa-based Cheetah FC Christian Agyenim Boateng fired the visitors into the lead just before the break – a goal which prompted some Southampton fans to make for the exits.
Chances were few and far between for the rest of the first half, however, after recess Heart of Lions survived the final 45 minutes to claim an important three points.
Legon Cities remain on 25 points in 17th position – and 25 adrift of Bashir Hayford's Heart of Lions, whose position in the table (3rd) makes them strong contenders in winning the league.
