Asante Kotoko have completed the signing of right-back Shayibu Abubakari on a three-year deal, making him their tenth addition in a busy transfer window ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign.

The 21-year-old arrives from Karela United after passing a medical, and is expected to bolster the Porcupine Warriors’ defensive options with his pace, versatility and attacking instincts.

Abubakari, who can also operate as a winger, has previous Ghana Premier League experience with Real Tamale United and briefly played in the Czech Republic with FK Mladá Boleslav.

“This is a great opportunity for me to grow and learn,” Abubakari told the club’s media team. “I’m excited to work with experienced players like Lord Amoah and contribute to the club’s ambitions both locally and on the continent.”

His arrival comes at a key time for coach Karim Zito, with first-choice full-back Emmanuel Kotei still sidelined by a long-term knee injury. Kotoko are also preparing for a CAF Confederation Cup campaign later this year.

Other new signings include Johnson Oppong, Francis Acquah and Zakariah Fusseni, underscoring Kotoko’s intent to challenge domestically and in Africa.

The Porcupine Warriors are due to travel to South Africa next week to compete in the Toyota Cup as they will clamp it down with Kaizer Chiefs as part of their pre-season preparations. The match is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.
