Bechem United assistant coach, Seth Osei Wire has urged national team coaches to consider dolling out national team call ups to goalkeepers playing their trade in the lower divisions.

His comments come after Bechem United goalkeepers Emmanuel Anning delivered top-notch performances in their 2-1 loss to FC Samartex last Sunday.

Osei wire believes that the trend at which goalkeepers who play for smaller clubs often being overlooked must stop, as most of them are more than most goalkeepers who play for top sides.

“Keepers who don’t play for the top teams are usually overlooked, but that’s not right. Even if a player plays for a lower division side and the player is good, I believe they should be selected for the national team,” Osei Wire stated.

The Black Stars will return to action later this month in the Unity Cup, which they will compete alongside Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago

The Unity Cup is expected to run from May 27 to May 31, 2025. Ghana will face bitter-rivals Nigeria in the semifinal on May 28, with the winner proceeding to the final on May 31 to clash with the victor of the game between Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago

All the matches will be played at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in West London, as coach Otto Addo is due to announce his squad in the coming days and he is expected to hand call ups to a couple of local players.
