Former Asante Kotoko defender Eric Donkor recently shared his perspective on the talent within the team, specifically highlighting midfielder Richmond Lamptey's prowess.
Donkor compared Lamptey's skill level to that of the esteemed Stephen Oduro, a player of significant influence during his era.
Lamptey's stellar performances for the Porcupine Warriors have not gone unnoticed, earning him a coveted spot in the Black Stars squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His consistent contributions on the field have been instrumental in Kotoko's successes this season.
Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding the quality of players in the Premier League, Donkor expressed his disagreement with the notion that current players are subpar. He attributed this misconception to the extended tenure of former players compared to the recent influx of talented individuals.
"We have quality players in the GPL who can match the caliber of players like Stephen Oduro, Ishmael Addo, Opoku Nti, and others. Richmond Lamptey is a prime example; he possesses skills comparable to Stephen Oduro," Donkor asserted during an interview with Akoma FM.
Donkor emphasized that players like Oduro, Malik Jabir, and Charles Taylor garnered admiration due to their prolonged presence in the local league. However, he refuted claims suggesting a decline in the league's overall quality, affirming the talent and potential of current players.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by modern players, particularly in retaining them within the league for extended periods. Despite Lamptey's promising talent, uncertainties regarding his future at Kotoko may hinder his prospects of attaining widespread recognition.
Kotoko's performance in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season has been a rollercoaster ride. The team endured a challenging second round, marked by a seven-game unbeaten run. However, recent victories and improved form have signaled a potential turnaround for the club.
Despite setbacks, Kotoko has shown resilience and determination, evidenced by their recent string of positive results. As they strive to overcome obstacles and regain momentum, the team's supporters remain hopeful for a strong finish to the season.
