In the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season, Abednego Tetteh, the striker for Bibiani Gold Stars, emerged as the leading goal scorer.
Tetteh's remarkable journey to clinch the top scorer title is truly sensational, considering his setbacks at Hearts of Oak, the reigning champions of the 2021 league, and his challenging period with King Faisal. Affectionately known as "Zlatatan" by the Ghanaian sports media, Tetteh decided to take a chance in a new environment and joined Bibiani Gold Stars, where he once again displayed his exceptional goal-scoring abilities.
The move to Gold Stars, a less intense environment, turned out to be a mutually beneficial decision for both Tetteh and the club. While he remains grateful for the opportunities he had at Hearts of Oak and King Faisal, his resurgence and the positive attention he has garnered with coach Michael Osei's team have reignited his passion for the game.
As the former Bechem United forward, Tetteh concluded the current league season with an impressive tally of 18 goals, securing him the prestigious title of the league's top scorer. He outperformed his competitors, including Hafiz Konkoni of Bechem United, who scored 15 goals, and Sampson Eduku of Tamale City FC, who finished with 14 goals.
With this accomplishment, Abednego Tetteh becomes the sixth player in the history of the GPL to claim the golden boot award with 18 goals, marking the fifth instance of such an outstanding feat. Previously, in 1980, Emmanuel Quarshie of Sekondi Hasaacas secured the golden boot with 18 goals, a record later jointly achieved by Bernard Don Bortey and Charles Asampong Taylor, both from Accra Hearts of Oak, in the 2002 season.
Prince Tagoe of Hearts of Oak replicated this achievement in the 2005 season by also scoring 18 goals. The feat was repeated a decade later in the 2020-2021 season by Diawusie Taylor of Karela United, who also finished with 18 goals to claim the top scorer title.
