At the Crossby Awuah Memorial Park, Karela United bounced back from their recent poor form by thrashing 10-man Hearts of Oak, handing the 2021 champions their worst defeat of the season with a 3-0 victory.
Goals from Owusu Boakye, Konadu Yiadom, and a late strike from Richard Berko sealed the win for the Aiyinase side, who were previously just two points away from the relegation zone. This victory has boosted their position to 11th in the standings while dealing a blow to Hearts' title hopes.
Former Hearts of Oak captain Fatawu Mohammed was instrumental in the win, setting up two of the three goals. Boakye nodded in Fatawu's cross to give Karela United the lead in the 17th minute, and Konadu Yiadom doubled their advantage by turning in another Fatawu cross.
Hearts of Oak's chances of a comeback were hindered when defender Rashid Okine was shown a red card just before halftime for fouling Abdul Ayeh as the last man.
In the second half, Karela United maintained their dominance and sealed the win through Berko's goal in the 87th minute, finishing off a counterattack in style.
Karela United will face King Faisal in the next round, while Hearts of Oak will aim to get back to winning ways against Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium.
