Karela United midfielder Mohammed Asigre Sulemana has temporarily traded the Ghana Premier League for the international student competition after being named in the University for Development Studies (UDS) squad for the World University Games in China.

The 22-year-old has been balancing professional football with his academic pursuits at UDS, and his latest call-up highlights the dual path he has chosen to pursue.

Sulemana is regarded as one of the more industrious midfielders in the domestic top flight and has been a consistent figure for Karela since breaking into the first team from Steadfast FC.

UDS are relying heavily on his energy and experience as they compete against some of the best university teams from across the globe. In their opening match at the World University Games, however, the Ghanaian outfit smashed past University of Sharjah (UAE) with a 2-1 victory.

For Sulemana, it represents both an opportunity to showcase Ghanaian football talent on a new platform and underline the growing importance of education in the modern game.

Karela, meanwhile, are keeping a close eye on their midfielder’s exploits, confident that his time with UDS in an international tournament will only add to his maturity and development.

Last season Sulemana featured in 23 games for Karela United in the Ghana Premier League, chipping in with a goal.
