LIVE ON STARTIMES
Nations FC's coach, Kassim Mingle, expressed his disappointment following his team's narrow defeat to Dreams FC on a Wednesday afternoon.
Hundreds of players have played for Accra Hearts of Oak since it first began in 1911, with some remembered more than others. We’ve decided to take a look at 12 players, who you probably have forgotten played for the Phobians. So sit back and enjoy, as we take a trip down the dark alley of memory lane.
Edwin Osei Pele
The forward joined the Phobians from Kessben FC and soon warmed his way into the hearts of the Hearts faithful with some consistent performances for his new employers in the 2009/10 GHALCA Top 4. Pele emerged the goal king of the tournament. Sadly, he could not replicate same form in the league season and was eventually transferred to Aduana Stars and RTU on loan.
Bright Lukman
The Twifo-Praso born and raised forward had joined Hearts in 2016 following his impressive goal scoring feats with Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs. At Hearts, he struggled to get into the good books of Frank Nuttall and spent the entire season with limited game time. The following season was no different and the club finally released him at the end of the season.
Abubakar Moro
Popularly called ‘Ember’ in Nima and neighbouring communities, Moro played for the Phobians between 2009-2014 and was a key member of the Hearts team that won the league in 2011/12 season. He rose through the ranks to captain the club and made 84 appearances scoring a solitary goal throughout his stay with the Accra club.
James Kwame Abban
Abban joined Hearts on a 2 and a half deal from Liberty professionals in 2012. Prior to joining the Phobians, Abban was one of the mostsought-after players in the transfer market but it was Hearts that won the race to sign him on. However, he failed to impose himself at the club and was transferred to Medeama after just a season.
Karim Alhassan
The centre-back left Hearts in 2011 after seeking out his three-year deal with the club. Virtually unknown until his arrival at the club rose to become one of the best in position in the Ghanaian top flight division.
Godwin Osei Bonsu
The burly centre-back played for Hearts between 2008 and 2013. He won the Ghanaian Premier League title with the Phobians in the 2008/09 season and was an integral member of the Ghana team that placed second the CHAN tournament in 2009.
Mohammed Tetteh Nortey
Mohammed Tetteh Nortey is an established Premier League defender. Nortey has played for Elmina Sharks, King Faisal and Techiman Eleven Wonders but had previously played for Hearts from 2008 to 2012.
Tetteh Luggard
The goalkeeper joined Hearts from St. Mirren in 2010, and for five seasons failed to stake a claim at the club and was subsequently released. Luggard on several occasions was at the receiving end of the fans for his abysmal performances for the club.
Owusu Sefa
The diminutive left-back was one of the best in his position during his days with Ashantigold. Having failed to make the grade at Hearts, he later moved to Amidaus Professionals on loan.
Joseph Tagoe
He was popularly known as ‘Bobby Short.’ He is remembered one of the greatest players in Great Olympics’ history. However, Tagoe was a million miles from the midfielder that caught the attention of the Phobians as he failed to live up to expectations.
Baba Sampana
Who? When you think of Hearts goalkeepers of the past, Sampana is without question one that doesn’t spring to mind. Thankfully for the Ghanaian giants he signed on a free transfer in 2009 after his contract ended with Sekondi Eleven Wise. After failing to break into the Hearts team, he joined Medeama in 2011.
Emmanuel Mintah
Emmanuel Mintah was brought to the club in the summer of 2019, the idea being the former Karela United man could operate as a defensive midfielder and also as a centre-back. He never suited the playing style, and some of the club's worst performances came when he started in the XI. After a season.
Nations FC tasted a defeat in their maiden Ghana Premier League game after an away loss to Dreams FC in the match-week one of the 2023/24 season at the Theatre of Dreams, Dawu.
Accra Lions presented a significant challenge to Medeama SC during their clash in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season on Wednesday.
Hearts of Oak's Communications Manager, Opare Addo, has expressed confidence in the team's ability to bounce back following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Real Tamale United on the opening day of the Ghana Premier League.
Karim Zito, the head coach of Dreams FC, has set an ambitious goal for the upcoming Ghana Premier League season: winning their first five matches.
There is a lot of quality at Hearts of Oak but the Dutchman has lamented that every player must fight to break into the first team, as playing time is not a gift.
Dreams FC's head coach, Karim Zito, has set an ambitious goal for the upcoming Ghana Premier League season, aiming to secure victories in their first five matches.
Hearts of Oak's head coach, Martin Koopman, has emphasized the need for his players to compete vigorously for a spot in the starting lineup throughout the season.
