Spain national team head coach, Luis Enrique Martinez has opened up on why he's added Nico Williams to his squad for their upcoming friendlies, stating the intention isn't to stop him from featuring for the Black Stars in future.
Nico's senior brother and Athletico Bilbao teammate, Inaki Williams was also once a conjurer for the Spanish national team but has now switched his nationality to a Ghanaian and is currently with the Black Stars in France for their friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.
His naturalization gave Ghanaians the hope that his younger brother might follow suit but looks like that has hit a snag after Nico Williams was handed his first Spain invite ahead of their games against
Clearing the air on the recent brouhaha, the former FC Barcelona manager has disclosed the aim isn't to ruin the 20 year old's chances of playing for Ghana in future but is rather impressed with his progression from their youth national teams.
Also, he imagined that, Inaki and Nico Williams being to the final thus indirectly Ghana - Spain, would be an absolute business to the game. He told The Guardian;
"I’m not doing this to stop from him going with Ghana; he’s young and a very interesting player."
“He’s playing more often with Athletic now. He’s progressing wonderfully. I like him enormously. We’ve had him in the junior squad and have been following him for a long time. I reckon the family will be delighted: imagine the party if they both go to the World Cup. And they reach the final, well, that would be the absolute business.”
