Lionel Messi signed off from international football in style as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in his final appearance for the national team at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

The 39-year-old forward delivered a memorable performance, scoring from the penalty spot and providing two assists as the Albiceleste gave their captain a fitting farewell in front of a packed home crowd.

Messi first set up Nicolás Otamendi for Argentina’s opening goal shortly after the restart, with the defender converting from his corner.

He later turned provider again for Como starman Nico Paz, who has been tipped to inherit the number 10 shirt after Messi, before completing his own impressive display with a penalty.

The performance brought an emotional end to Messi’s 21-year international career. He leaves the Argentina team as their record appearance-maker and leading scorer, having played 208 matches and scored 126 goals.

Messi’s international journey included the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 and an Olympic gold medal.

His relationship with Argentina was also marked by difficult moments before he eventually became one of the country’s biggest sporting icons.

With more than 85,000 supporters at the Monumental, Messi was given an emotional send-off as his Argentina chapter came to an end.

He will now continue his club career with Inter Miami after bowing out of international football with a goal, two assists and another victory.
